Water Safety Information

1 - Learn to Swim. Strong swimming skills, knowledge and respect for the water are commonly listed as top safety factors.  From the American Red Cross Water Safety Handbook: “The best thing anyone can do to stay safe in, on and around the water is to learn to swim.”

2 - Supervision. Even in shallow water, children need close supervision. Safe supervision of very young children requires you to be within arm’s reach.

3 - Flotation Devices. Do not rely on flotation devices for safety. Air-filled “floaties” are not an appropriate safety measure for children.

4 - Pool Toys. Pool toys can attract smaller children to deep water. Large pool toys can create hazards during play - including trapping children underwater. Older children need to be aware of these dangers and supervision is important even for strong swimmers.

5 - Horseplay. Kids get excited in and around the water - that’s natural. Running and rough play are big contributors to serious accidents. Kids (and grown-up kids) can have fun without stunts and out-of-control play that create hazards for everyone in the pool.

6 - Pool Rules! You usually see pool rules at public and community pools. They are important and really should be required to be posted at every pool! Please read them and have your kids obey them.

7 - Red Cross Water Safety Info. A Water Safety Handbook is available from the Red Cross.

Have fun and stay safe in the water!!
